TD Lights Up Downtown Toronto for Diwali with Personalized Messages from the Community

A Celebration of Light, Hope, and Togetherness and Cultural Heritage at TD’s Queen and Bay Branch

As we prepare to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, TD is bringing a little extra light to the heart of downtown Toronto! Inspired by the spirit of Diwali, TD is transforming its Queen & Bay branch into a vibrant display of festive lights, where visitors can share personalized messages with loved ones and see them illuminated on the branch, celebrating hope, togetherness, and brighter future.

The initiative was highlighted during a special interview on Radio Y 105.9 FM, where Harpreet Johal, Branch Manager at TD, shared her childhood memories and personal reflections with Diwali, as well as how the Bank is celebrating Diwali while creating meaningful opportunities for the community to connect and honour our cultural heritage.

Lighting Up Downtown Toronto

Located just across from Nathan Phillips Square, where one of Toronto’s largest Diwali celebrations will take place, the TD Queen & Bay branch will join in the festive atmosphere and be illuminated after dark on October 24 – 25 and November 7 – 8, bringing the joy and spirit of Diwali through a dazzling display of lights and interactive experiences.

More than just a festive light display, the experience on the weekend of October 24 – 25 also invites the community to become part of the celebration. Visitors can select a heartfelt message of love, gratitude or appreciation in the language of their choice, personalize it with their loved ones’ names, and see it come to life on the branch, creating a celebration shaped by the community itself.

Celebrating Culture and Community Connections

During the conversation with Radio Y 105.9 FM, Harpreet Johal shared her childhood memories of Diwali celebrations, including cleaning the house, wearing new clothes, sharing sweets, and visiting relatives. She emphasized that Diwali represents much more than festive decorations and celebrations. It is an opportunity to strengthen community connections, embrace cultural traditions and pass meaningful values on to future generations.

“Beyond the lights and celebrations, Diwali is really about coming together with family and loved ones, being grateful for what we have, and looking ahead with hope for new beginnings.” – Harpreet Johal

Johal highlighted that TD recognizes the moments that matter to its customers well beyond banking. Cultural moments like Diwali are an important part of people’s lives, bringing families and communities together through shared traditions and experiences. Through community initiatives, TD hopes to build meaningful connections with the diverse newcomer communities it serves.

For South Asian families, particularly newcomers and younger generations growing up in Canada, celebrations like these offer a meaningful opportunity to celebrate cherished traditions, stay connected to their cultural roots, and share their cultural heritage with the broader community.

Whether visitors are celebrating Diwali with family, experiencing the festival for the first time, or simply looking to enjoy the beautiful lighting displays and share meaningful messages of gratitude, everyone is welcome to participate.

Supporting Brighter Financial Futures

Aside from the festivities, Johal also highlighted TD’s ongoing commitment to supporting Canadians, including the South Asian community and newcomers, as they build their lives and work toward their financial goals.

As Diwali is a time to pause, reset, and look ahead, Johal encouraged listeners to review their finances during this time of the year, whether that’s reviewing the household budget, setting savings goals, or planning for the future. TD aims to support the community throughout their financial journey by providing accessible financial advice, banking solutions and educational resources to help them build financial knowledge and confidence.

To make banking more accessible, TD offers in-language banking services, including Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, to help the multicultural communities navigate the Canadian financial system and make informed decisions with greater confidence. Newcomers can also explore the TD New to Canada Banking Package and the online educational resources from the TD New to Canada Learning Centre.

Through financial education, accessible advice and community engagement, TD continues to support the diverse communities it serves, helping Canadians navigate important life milestones and work toward brighter financial futures.

Spreading Light, Creating Connections

As the interview concluded, Johal encouraged Canadians to embrace the true spirit of Diwali by spreading kindness, supporting one another, and celebrating the connections that bring communities together.

This Diwali, TD invites Canadians from all backgrounds to come together and celebrate the Festival of Lights, bringing the spirit of Diwali to the heart of Toronto through this shared community celebration.
