Ukraine Claims Record 33,000 Russian Drones Shot Down In March

Ukraine says it intercepted more than 33,000 Russian drones in March, marking the highest monthly total since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, as the war enters a new phase dominated by aerial warfare.

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the surge reflects Kyiv’s growing reliance on advanced interceptor drone systems, which have become central to its air defence strategy against sustained Russian attacks.

Ukraine has rapidly expanded its drone capabilities, developing both defensive and offensive technologies that are now drawing international interest, particularly from Middle Eastern and Gulf nations amid ongoing regional tensions.

At the same time, Ukrainian forces have intensified long-range strikes deep inside Russian territory. Officials say Ukraine has more than doubled its strike range since 2022 — from roughly 630 kilometres to nearly 1,750 kilometres — enabling attacks on key infrastructure supporting Moscow’s war effort.

In a recent operation, Ukraine targeted an oil refinery in Tuapse on the Black Sea for the third time this month. Authorities say previous strikes destroyed 24 oil storage tanks and damaged several others, while local officials in Russia confirmed evacuations in nearby areas as a precaution.

Russia, meanwhile, reported intercepting 186 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, including Crimea and areas bordering Ukraine. Officials also said a drone attack in the Belgorod region killed three people and injured others.

On the Ukrainian side, continued Russian drone strikes killed at least three civilians and wounded several more, with casualties reported in regions including Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Critical infrastructure was also hit, with the city of Konotop left without power and water following an attack.

While battlefield claims from both sides remain difficult to independently verify, the escalation in drone warfare underscores a shifting dynamic in the conflict, where technological innovation is increasingly shaping the front lines.
