Iran’s Rial Hits Record Low Amid Fragile Ceasefire And Economic Strain

Iran’s national currency has plunged to a historic low, underscoring mounting economic pressure despite a fragile ceasefire involving Iran, United States, and Israel.

The Iranian rial fell to approximately 1.8 million to the U.S. dollar, marking its weakest level on record. The sharp decline comes just days after relative stability during the early weeks of the conflict that began on February 28.

Economists warn the currency slide is likely to accelerate inflation, particularly in a country heavily reliant on imports for essential goods such as food, medicine, and industrial materials. As the rial weakens, the cost of these goods—already rising—continues to surge, placing additional strain on households.

A key factor behind the downturn is the ongoing U.S. naval blockade, which has restricted Iran’s oil exports—one of its primary sources of foreign currency and government revenue. The disruption has compounded longstanding economic challenges, including international sanctions, chronic inflation, and currency instability.

The latest drop follows a previous currency shock earlier this year that triggered widespread protests, as rapid depreciation fueled public frustration over rising living costs and economic uncertainty.

Signs of economic stress are also emerging in the labour market. Reports indicate layoffs in sectors such as textiles, with companies cutting jobs or opting not to renew contracts amid declining demand and rising operational costs.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region continue. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said his government remains engaged in easing tensions following initial U.S.-Iran talks earlier this month.

Despite the ceasefire holding for now, the economic fallout appears to be deepening—highlighting the fragile balance between geopolitical stability and financial recovery in the region.
