Louise Arbour To Be Sworn In As Canada’s 31st Governor General

Arbour, 79, brings decades of experience in law, public service, and international diplomacy to the role. Widely regarded as one of Canada’s most accomplished jurists, she has served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, among several other influential positions throughout her distinguished career.

As governor general, Arbour will serve as the King’s representative in Canada, carrying out important constitutional responsibilities such as granting royal assent to legislation, swearing in cabinet ministers, and performing ceremonial and official duties on behalf of the Crown.

The installation ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET in Ottawa, officially marking the start of Arbour’s tenure as Canada’s new governor general.
