G7 Issues Joint Declaration Backing Ukraine, Signals New Sanctions Pressure On Russia

Leaders of the G7 nations have reaffirmed their united support for Ukraine and pledged to intensify economic pressure on Russia, including through additional sanctions targeting Moscow’s critical oil and gas sectors.

In a joint statement released Wednesday at the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, leaders reiterated their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as the war with Russia continues.

“We stand united in support of Ukraine, including its territorial integrity,” the leaders said, adding that they would strengthen measures aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to finance its military operations.

“In this context, we will strengthen our sanctions, including those on the oil and gas sectors,” the statement noted.

The commitment comes as Western governments seek to maintain pressure on the Russian economy while supporting Ukraine’s military and reconstruction efforts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the summit and held discussions with several G7 leaders on the ongoing conflict and future support.

Alongside discussions on Ukraine, G7 leaders also addressed developments in the Middle East, welcoming the recently announced framework agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending hostilities in the region.

The leaders said they were prepared to assist with the implementation of the agreement and support efforts to restore stability following months of conflict that disrupted global energy markets and maritime trade.

Recognizing the vulnerability of global energy supplies during the crisis, the G7 also agreed to reduce dependence on critical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

The joint statement said member countries would work to diversify energy supply routes, strengthen energy security and increase strategic energy reserves to better withstand future disruptions.

The twin focus on Ukraine and the Middle East underscored the summit’s broader emphasis on global security, energy resilience and international cooperation, with leaders seeking to address two of the world’s most consequential geopolitical crises simultaneously.

The declaration signals continued Western alignment on support for Ukraine while also backing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Middle East and safeguard global energy markets.
