Anand Calls Iran’s Attacks On Gulf Shipping “Unacceptable” And “Unjustified”

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has condemned Iran’s recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf, calling the strikes “unacceptable” and “unjustified” as tensions escalate despite a fragile ceasefire.

Speaking to reporters in Jeddah on Thursday after meeting Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Anand said Canada stands with Gulf nations facing growing security threats linked to Iran’s actions.

She stressed that while ceasefires are often fragile, targeting civilian shipping and commercial vessels cannot be justified.

The remarks come after the United States launched fresh airstrikes against Iran early Thursday, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Gulf countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran’s attacks on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global shipping route—effectively ended the ceasefire between the two sides.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also addressed the conflict during the NATO summit, describing Iran’s recent actions as “irresponsible” while calling the U.S. military response “appropriate.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, with any disruption posing significant risks to global energy supplies and international trade.
