Iran has accused Saudi Arabia of seeking to postpone a key regional meeting aimed at addressing security and maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions surrounding critical Middle Eastern energy routes continue to intensify.
Foreign ministers from Iran, Iraq and several Gulf countries had been expected to gather in Salalah, Oman, for discussions focused on security and freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Saudi Arabia requested that the meeting not proceed for the time being.
Riyadh has not publicly confirmed Iran’s account or provided an explanation for the alleged request. Oman, which was expected to host the discussions, said the meeting had been postponed in an effort to establish conditions more conducive to constructive dialogue.
Despite the setback to the wider regional talks, Tehran says it has finalized a separate maritime understanding with Oman. The development comes as governments across the region face growing pressure to safeguard shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, two of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
Concerns over regional energy flows have also intensified following damage to Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline, potentially complicating the kingdom’s ability to maintain oil exports through the Red Sea. The combination of maritime security concerns, infrastructure disruptions and stalled diplomatic talks has added further uncertainty to the Gulf energy outlook.
