Sally Field used her acceptance speech at the 2026 Emmy Awards to address both growing tensions between Canada and the United States and concerns about consolidation in Hollywood, warning that the entertainment industry’s creative voices must not be “silenced or compromised or merged.”
Field won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie/Limited Series for her lead performance in Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” During an emotional speech at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the veteran actor thanked co-star Lewis Pullman and cinematographer Ashley Connor.
Field praised Connor’s work in transforming the production’s Pacific Northwest setting into an integral part of the story before pointing out that the project was actually filmed in Canada. She then described Canada as America’s neighbour and friend, remarks that came amid heightened tensions between the two countries over the Trump administration’s tariff policies.
Her comments also came as debate continues within the American entertainment industry over the number of Hollywood productions filmed outside the United States, including in Canada. President Donald Trump and some entertainment figures have criticized the movement of film and television production abroad.
Field then turned to another major issue confronting Hollywood: consolidation within the entertainment industry. Her remarks appeared to reference Paramount’s proposed takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery as she reflected on more than six decades working in the arts.
Field emphasized the importance of diversity and distinctive storytelling, arguing that the creative community and its voices must be protected from being diminished, compromised or absorbed through consolidation.
The speech was one of several moments during the ceremony in which prominent performers addressed broader political and social issues. “The Traitors” host Alan Cumming also used his acceptance remarks to encourage Americans to register and vote in the upcoming midterm elections.
Cumming declared that the time for discussion had passed and urged Americans to take their concerns to the ballot box, adding another political message to an Emmy ceremony that extended beyond recognition of television performances and productions.
