Four days after the husband of a sitting Aam Aadmi Party woman sarpanch was found dead in Punjab, police have yet to report a breakthrough in the investigation, prompting Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla to demand a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The deceased, identified as Kuljit Singh Sandhu, left his home on September 21 but did not return. His family began searching for him and subsequently approached police after they were unable to determine his whereabouts.
Sandhu’s body was recovered on September 23 along a road in Raval village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Dera Baba Nanak police station.
Ashok Kumar, station house officer at Dera Baba Nanak police station, said an autopsy indicated that Sandhu had died approximately three days before the examination. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Ramdass police also registered a missing-person report on September 23.
As questions surrounding the case continued, Aujla called for the investigation to be transferred to the CBI if Punjab Police could not determine what happened.
“If the Punjab Police were unable to get to the bottom of the matter, the government should have handed over the investigation to the CBI,” Aujla said, adding that he was prepared to approach the courts seeking justice.
The Amritsar MP also questioned why Sandhu’s location could not be traced after he disappeared. According to Aujla, Sandhu’s mobile phone remained switched on for several hours after he went missing, raising questions about whether its location could have been tracked by investigators.
Sandhu’s family has also expressed doubts about the possibility that his death resulted from an accident, pointing to the condition of his motorcycle as one reason for questioning that explanation.
Police have not announced a definitive cause or circumstances surrounding Sandhu’s death, and the investigation remains underway.
