A Punjabi-origin Canadian man has been arrested in Faridkot after Punjab Police’s State Special Operations Cell allegedly recovered two grenades from his possession, with investigators probing suspected links to Pakistan-based terror modules.
The accused has been identified as Navjot Singh, alias Nav, described in the police case as a permanent resident of Canada whose parents live in Guru Arjan Dev Nagar in Faridkot. He was arrested five days after returning to India from Canada.
According to the FIR registered at the State Special Operations Cell police station in Fazilka, investigators suspect Singh had links with Pakistan-based terror modules and other cross-border elements. Police further allege that drones were used to obtain explosive material intended to disrupt peace and communal harmony in Punjab. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Police said an SSOC team acted on specific intelligence and intercepted Singh near Kaussa Road, close to Nehru Stadium in Faridkot, at approximately 10:50 p.m. Thursday. Officers allege that two grenades were recovered from his possession.
A case has been registered under Sections 4, 5 and 6 of India’s Explosive Substances Act, 1908, along with Sections 15, 16 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Inspector Satinderdeep Singh Brar of the Intelligence Wing is the complainant and has also been assigned to investigate the case.
Singh’s father, Suba Singh, has disputed the police account of how his son was taken into custody. He said Navjot returned to India on September 12 and told him Thursday evening that a courier was expected to arrive.
According to the father, the two travelled to Sadiq Chowk to collect the package, where he claims police detained both of them. Suba Singh said he was released later that night while his son remained in custody. He has called for justice in the case.
Punjab Police said questioning of the accused is continuing as investigators seek to determine whether he was connected to a wider network and whether any specific locations or individuals may have been intended targets.
Investigators are also examining the case in connection with an upcoming religious congregation, according to police. Authorities have not publicly identified any alleged target, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The accusations against Navjot Singh remain allegations contained in the police case, and no court has determined his guilt.
