Canadian premiers meet with Trudeau amid looming threat of Trump’s tariffs

15th Jan: Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed strong concerns about U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s potential tariffs on Canadian goods, warning that they could severely harm Canada’s economy. He emphasized that Canada must be ready to respond aggressively if necessary, using all available measures.

Before meeting with other premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa, Ford stated that Canada should consider retaliating against the U.S. with tariffs of its own if Trump proceeds with a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods. Ford argued that Canada cannot passively accept such attacks on its economy and workers.

Ford, who wore a “Canada is not for sale” hat, suggested that withholding energy exports to the U.S. might be a response, a move that could impact millions of Americans dependent on Canadian energy.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith voiced concerns about the federal government potentially restricting Alberta’s oil exports to the U.S., which she said could lead to a “national unity crisis.” Ford, however, believes all provinces must unite and consider every option, including halting oil and gas exports, to put maximum pressure on the U.S.

Ford argued that negotiating from a position of strength is essential, and oil could be a vital bargaining chip. Canada exports millions of barrels of oil to the U.S. daily, and any disruption to that supply could significantly affect the U.S. economy.

In response to Alberta’s opposition to stopping oil exports, Ford emphasized that all measures should be on the table to protect Canada’s interests.
