Eric Trump posts fake image of Trump ‘buying Canada’ as tariff tensions rise

24th Dec 2024: In recent developments, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters have continued to make lighthearted comments about the idea of annexing Canada, though Canadian officials are dismissing these remarks as inconsequential. Eric Trump, in a social media post, shared a doctored image of his father purchasing Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal on Amazon, accompanied by the phrase, “We are so back!!!”

Since winning the presidential election, Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as the “51st state” and has called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the “governor” of Canada. The president-elect has also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, prompting discussions within the Canadian government about how to address potential trade tensions.

While some analysts view these comments as provocations aimed at his supporters, Carleton University professor Aaron Ettinger emphasized the importance of focusing on the real threat posed by tariffs rather than engaging in rhetoric. He noted that Trump’s comments were more about gaining attention than presenting a serious threat of annexation.

In response to the ongoing remarks, Ontario Premier Doug Ford reaffirmed Canada’s sovereignty, stating, “We’ll never be the 51st state. We’re Canada; we’re proud to be Canadians.” Ettinger also advised Canadian officials to prioritize discussions on trade relations and tariffs with the U.S. instead of getting caught up in the back-and-forth of political commentary.

In response to Trump’s tariff threats, the Canadian government has unveiled a $1.3 billion spending package to address security concerns and the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, has played down Trump’s comments, describing them as friendly banter between close allies. Additionally, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly humorously suggested to Republican senators that they could join Canada as the “11th province.”

Meanwhile, Greenland’s leader, Mute Bourup Egede, has dismissed Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing the territory, reiterating that such proposals are as unrealistic as they were during his first term.
