Former Jets star Nick Mangold dies at 41, just weeks after revealing kidney disease

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold, one of the team’s most beloved and accomplished players, has died at age 41, the franchise announced Sunday. Mangold passed away Saturday night from complications related to kidney disease, less than two weeks after publicly revealing his condition and appealing for a transplant donor. “I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time,” Mangold wrote earlier this month, addressing the Jets and Ohio State communities in an emotional post. He explained that he had been living with a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006 that caused chronic kidney disease and required dialysis while awaiting a donor with type O blood.

Jets owner Woody Johnson paid tribute to Mangold, calling him “more than a legendary center.” Johnson said, “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.” Drafted by the Jets in the first round in 2006 out of Ohio State University, Mangold became a cornerstone of the team’s offense for 11 seasons. A two-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler, he was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
Mangold is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte.

Known for his leadership, humor, and community spirit, Mangold leaves behind a legacy as one of the greatest offensive linemen in Jets history — and a fan favorite whose impact extended far beyond the field.
