18 Jan: Government House Leader Karina Gould confirmed her candidacy for the Liberal leadership race on Saturday, positioning herself as a voice for everyday Canadians and the youngest contender to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In a video posted on social media, the Burlington MP called for renewed leadership to address the challenges Canadians face.
“We need new leadership to fight for everyday Canadians,” Gould said. “A leader who understands what people are going through and works every day to make their lives better. I’m here for Canada—today, tomorrow, and for years to come.”
Gould’s announcement follows former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor Mark Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, both of whom recently confirmed their entries into the leadership race.
First elected in 2015, Gould has served in Trudeau’s cabinet since 2017, holding roles such as Minister of Democratic Institutions, Minister of International Development, and Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development. Notably, she made history as the first federal cabinet minister to take maternity leave. During her tenure, Gould helped implement the federal government’s flagship $10-a-day childcare program.
As the government’s leader in the House of Commons, Gould has frequently faced off against Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. In her campaign video, she acknowledged Canadians’ growing discontent with the Liberal Party and emphasized the need to rebuild trust.
“Canadians have lost faith in us,” Gould said. “We need to rebuild our party so we can keep building our country.”
At 37, Gould is the youngest candidate in the leadership race and the first sitting cabinet minister to declare her candidacy, with several ministers opting not to run. Other declared contenders include MPs Chandra Arya and Jaime Battiste, as well as former Montreal MP and businessman Frank Baylis.
Gould also addressed the rising concerns about the future, referencing challenges posed by U.S. politics and voices advocating for closer alignment with America.
“There are people tearing down Canada, saying the country is broken, saying we should become American,” Gould stated. “We are strong, hardworking, and caring people who don’t back down from fighting for what is right.”
Freeland, who announced her candidacy earlier, also played up Canadian identity in her campaign message while taking aim at incoming U.S. President Donald Trump. Freeland emphasized Canada’s independence and her past negotiations with Trump, calling him out for his aggressive stance on Canada.
“Trump thinks we’re for sale, but he can’t take what isn’t his. We’re not going to let him,” Freeland said in her campaign video.
With the race heating up, the Liberal leadership contest is set to shape the party’s direction and determine Canada’s next prime minister.
