Markham crash kills 75-year-old man, york police seek witnesses

A 75-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle collision in Markham late Thursday morning, according to York Regional Police.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Jan. 22 on Ninth Line, between Elgin Mills Road and 19th Avenue. Police say the collision involved a Hyundai Tucson and a Hyundai Sonata.

Investigators said the Tucson was travelling southbound while the Sonata was heading northbound when the two vehicles collided. The 75-year-old driver of the Tucson was taken to hospital without vital signs and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Sonata, a 23-year-old man, was transported to a trauma centre, where he remains in serious condition.

The collision remains under investigation. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7704.
