Navigating Finances in Canada: TD’s Support for Newcomers

Moving to Canada brings excitement and opportunity—but it can also bring challenges, especially when it comes to navigating a new financial system. For many newcomers, managing day-to-day expenses, understanding banking options, and planning for the future can feel overwhelming. That’s why TD has made it a priority to help newcomers build confidence and financial security from the very start of their journey.

In an exclusive conversation with Y Media Radio 105.9 FM, Sonia Bassi, Branch Manager at TD, highlighted the barriers newcomers often face. A TD’s recent study shows that more than 76% of South Asian newcomers receive information for financial guidance from informal sources, such as friends and family. While these connections are valuable, the information may not always be accurate or reflect reality, leaving newcomers unsure of how to begin their financial journey in Canada.

Resources for Newcomers to Build Financial Confidence

Newcomers can utilize the following resources to bridge the information gap:

  • CanadaVisa Partnership: Through the CanadaVisa website, newcomers can access step-by-step guidance on the types of accounts, resources, and tools they will need upon arrival.
  • HDFC Bank & TD’s International Student GIC Program: Designed for international students, this program helps them conveniently meet the requirements of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) study permit pathway and offers them a range of financial benefits.
  • Collaboration with MPOWER Financing: TD offers a comprehensive suite of financial resources for international students at the universities supported by MPOWER, helping to create a seamless banking experience.
  • Benefits Wayfinder: Backed by TD with a $3 million sponsorship, Benefits Wayfinder tool helps newcomers and students discover government benefits to boost income and reduce living costs in Canada.
  • ABC Life Literacy’s Financial Literacy Program: Since 2011, TD has been the founding sponsor of Money Matters, an introductory financial literacy program that offers free workshops to empower individuals with essential money management skills.

Building a Strong Financial Foundation

Whether it’s choosing the right account, accessing student banking packages, or starting to build credit, TD ensures that newcomers have the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Offering resources in more than 50 languages in branches and over 200 languages via phone, TD goes beyond banking—it provides confidence, clarity, and community support.

As Sonia Bassi emphasized during the interview, “It’s about making sure that newcomers feel more confident about their finances, so they can focus on building their life in Canada.”
