Ontario issues yellow warning, 10 centimeters of snow

Environment Canada has issued a yellow-level snowfall warning across southern Ontario for Wednesday, forecasting 10 centimetres or more of snow in many regions. The system, driven by an Alberta clipper, began moving in early Wednesday and is expected to bring periods of heavy snowfall throughout the day.

Areas closest to Lake Ontario are likely to see smaller accumulations as temperatures near the shoreline may cause a shift to rain or a rain–snow mix. Toronto is projected to receive around 10 centimetres, while communities north of the city, including Barrie, could see closer to 15 centimetres.

The agency cautions that travel will be difficult, with snow-covered roads, slippery surfaces and reduced visibility likely to affect the morning and evening commutes. Drivers are advised to allow extra time, anticipate rapidly changing conditions and take necessary precautions. The snowfall alert coincides with Canada’s new colour-coded weather warning system, designed to make severity levels easier to understand.

Wednesday’s advisory falls under the yellow category, indicating hazardous weather that may result in moderate, short-term disruption or impacts. Orange alerts signal severe weather with significant, potentially multi-day effects, while red alerts remain rare and are reserved for life-threatening conditions with widespread and prolonged damage.
