Peel Region Receives Funding From The Government of Ontario To Expand Overnight Respite At the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor

Peel Region is pleased to announce the Government of Ontario will provide $563,582 in start-up funding and $901,204 in annual funding to support ongoing overnight respite care at the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor.

As Peel’s population continues to age, with one in five residents expected to be over 65 by 2041, caregiver support has become increasingly critical. According to the most recent Census data, the number of working-age adults living in Peel compared to older residents is declining, down from eight per older adult in 2006 to five in 2021, with pressures continuing to intensify.

These demographic shifts heighten caregiver burden, increasing the risk of burnout, declining caregiver health, and care breakdown. When caregivers do not receive adequate support, the strain extends to families, hospitals, paramedic services, and long-term care homes.

Overnight respite provides short-term, personalized care for adults who are frail, living with dementia, or managing disabilities or chronic illness. During a 7-14 day stay, caregivers receive time to rest, work, travel, or attend to their own health and well-being, helping them maintain the resilience needed to continue providing safe, loving care at home.

Respite services at the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor are already making a meaningful difference for local families. In a December 2025 caregiver survey, 100% of respondents were satisfied overall with the program, and 95% reported reduced strain or stress as a result of receiving overnight respite support.

Quotations

“The care, the love, the one-on-one interaction with the staff is what we really find exceptional. And attending the Adult Day program to interact with other seniors and staff members is priceless. We feel that we are leaving Mary with family. We can go home knowing that Mary will be safe, happy, and well taken care of. And we get a chance to reenergize, rest, and relax.”

“Caring for a loved one is one of the most meaningful things we can do. But even the most dedicated caregivers need time to rest, recharge, and look after their own well-being. Overnight respite fills a critical care gap by providing caregivers the support they need, while helping reduce pressures on hospitals and long-term care services across Peel.”

-Nancy Polsinelli, Commissioner of Health Services, Peel Region

“There are many misconceptions about respite care. Some believe it is for emergencies, but respite is a planned service designed to prevent crisis, not respond to it. Caregivers sometimes feel they are failing their loved one by accepting support, when taking a break is actually an act of strength. Through overnight respite and a range of wraparound supports, the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor offers seniors and caregivers comprehensive care that enhances quality of life.”

-Cathy Granger, General Manager, Seniors Services, Peel Region

“On behalf of Peel Region, thank you to the Government of Ontario for this critical investment in seniors and respite care. This commitment represents a meaningful step toward closing longstanding gaps in supports that help older adults age safely and comfortably at home. Our focus is simple: to strengthen care and enhance quality of life for people living with dementia, and for the caregivers who stand beside them every day. By working together, we can ensure that every individual with dementia, and every caregiver, feels supported, valued, and connected.”

-Nando Iannicca, Peel Regional Chair and CEO
