Some farmers in York Region raised concerns after Richmond Hill council voted to support more plant-based food choices at city events. They said the move could be seen as undermining local animal agriculture.
Coun. Scott Thompson, who introduced the motion, said that’s not the intention. He explained that encouraging plant-based options aligns with Richmond Hill’s climate goals and greenhouse gas reduction plans. The motion focuses on making more “environmentally friendly” plant-based foods available at city-run and community events, while also highlighting the health and environmental benefits of plant-based diets.
Thompson stressed that the initiative is not about discouraging meat consumption, but about giving residents more choices and supporting sustainability efforts.
