South Africa qualify for maiden World Test Championship final with thrilling win over Pakistan

Dec 29: In a thrilling showdown at Centurion Park, South Africa secured a dramatic two-wicket victory over Pakistan on Day 4 of the first Test, booking their spot in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The hosts were pushed to the brink during their modest chase of 148, as Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas delivered a stellar performance with figures of 6-54. His relentless 13-over spell left South Africa reeling at 99-8, losing four wickets for just three runs before lunch. However, tailenders Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen turned the tide in a gutsy unbroken partnership.

Rabada’s aggressive 31 off 26 balls, studded with five boundaries, complemented Jansen’s patient 16 not out. Jansen sealed the victory with a square-driven boundary, denying Pakistan their first Test win on South African soil in nearly two decades.

Earlier in the day, skipper Temba Bavuma (40) and opener Aiden Markram (37) resisted Pakistan’s attack, but a controversial decision marked Bavuma’s dismissal. The South African captain surprisingly didn’t opt for a review, despite replays suggesting the ball had brushed his pocket rather than the bat.

Despite the early setbacks, South Africa’s resilience shone through. With this win, they remain at the top of the WTC table, following impressive performances against India, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will rue missed opportunities and their inability to capitalize on South Africa’s precarious position. As the WTC final approaches at Lord’s next June, India, Australia, and Sri Lanka remain in contention to challenge South Africa for the championship title.
