Toronto police have arrested a second suspect in connection with the shooting at the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto earlier this year, as investigators continue to crack down on alleged gun-for-hire networks operating across the Greater Toronto Area.
Police announced Thursday that 19-year-old Zara Jabbi has been taken into custody and faces multiple charges related to the March 10 shooting. Investigators allege two suspects fired several shots at the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue before fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle.
The arrest follows the recent apprehension of 18-year-old Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, who was charged last week in connection with the same incident.
Authorities believe the consulate shooting is one of dozens of incidents linked to organized gun-for-hire networks that have been under intense investigation by Toronto police and regional law enforcement agencies.
The case has drawn added attention following the death of Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto, who was fatally shot last week while officers executed a search warrant related to the broader investigation.
Police allege that 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett, the man accused of shooting Pinizzotto, was injured after being shot by officers during the incident. Bennett is expected to face a charge of first-degree murder, along with charges connected to two additional shootings.
Investigators say efforts to dismantle the alleged criminal networks remain ongoing as authorities continue to pursue individuals connected to the string of violent incidents across the GTA.
