The United States has announced a sweeping military blockade of Iranian ports and coastal areas, significantly escalating tensions in the Middle East after ceasefire talks between Washington and Tehran collapsed over the weekend.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the blockade would take effect Monday morning, targeting vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports in both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. While ships traveling between non-Iranian ports will still be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the move signals a sharp increase in pressure on Tehran.
Iran responded swiftly, warning that no port in the region would remain safe if the blockade proceeds. Senior Iranian officials vowed retaliation, with parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stating, “If you fight, we will fight.”
The blockade follows the breakdown of high-level U.S.-Iran negotiations in Pakistan, where talks stalled over key issues including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and demands for compensation from recent strikes. U.S. officials insisted on strict conditions, including a commitment from Iran to halt nuclear weapon development, while Tehran accused Washington of overreach and shifting demands.
