Y Media Foreign Policy Report: Canada airdrops aid into Gaza after announcing recognition of Palestinian state

Canadian humanitarian aid is now being airdropped into Gaza, just one day after Ottawa declared its official recognition of a Palestinian state.

The move comes amid mounting international pressure on Israel to ease its restrictions on food and medical supplies entering the war-torn enclave, where severe shortages have triggered warnings of mass starvation. In response, Israel has slightly relaxed its blockade to allow more aid to reach civilians.

Following reports of deadly incidents at Israeli-run aid distribution sites — where hundreds were reportedly shot — the Canadian government and several charities pushed Israel to permit United Nations-led distribution of humanitarian aid via truck convoys.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that Jordan is assisting in the airdrop efforts and shared an image showing aid pallets bearing Canadian flags.

Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed to Israel’s strict limitations on humanitarian aid, along with a deteriorating path toward a two-state solution, as key reasons behind Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state.

The announcement was welcomed by some human rights advocates but criticized by Israel, which claims the move could disrupt ceasefire negotiations and embolden further violence.
