Trump announced on Friday that he had a highly constructive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney and anticipates an in-person meeting soon.
“I just wrapped up a call with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. It was a very productive discussion—we see eye to eye on many issues. Right after Canada’s upcoming election, we will meet to address politics, business, and other key matters that will greatly benefit both Canada and the United States,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The phone conversation, which took place Friday morning, marked the first direct exchange between the two leaders since Carney took office on March 14. This discussion followed Trump’s recent declaration that the U.S. would enforce a 25% tariff on vehicles manufactured outside its borders, beginning April 2—a move that could significantly impact Canada’s economy.
Trump often took a critical stance toward Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, frequently referring to him as “Governor Justin Trudeau” and accusing him of using trade negotiations with the U.S. for political gain.
Carney has not yet commented on his call with Trump. On Thursday, he briefly stepped away from his campaign to focus on the tariff issue, holding a meeting with his cabinet in Ottawa. Additionally, Carney is set to speak with Canada’s provincial leaders on Friday to discuss the escalating trade conflict.
