Vanshika Saini, a young Indian student originally from Dera Bassi in Punjab, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Ottawa, four days after she was reported missing. The Indian High Commission in Canada confirmed her death and said the local police have launched an investigation into the cause.
The 21-year-old had moved to Ottawa around two and a half years ago to pursue a diploma course after completing her schooling in India. She was the daughter of Devinder Singh, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and close associate of MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa.
According to reports, Vanshika went missing on the evening of April 25 after leaving her residence on 7 Majestic Drive between 8 and 9 p.m. to view a rental room. Her phone was switched off later that night around 11:40 p.m., and she failed to appear for an important exam the following day—an absence her family and friends described as highly unusual.
The Ottawa Indo-Canadian community expressed deep concern and submitted a letter to the Ottawa Police Service urging urgent action, citing the alarming circumstances and Vanshika’s vulnerability. The letter described widespread anxiety in the community and called for additional police resources to be dedicated to the investigation.
The High Commission of India in Ottawa, in a social media post, stated: “We are deeply saddened to be informed of the death of Ms. Vanshika, student from India in Ottawa. The matter has been taken up with concerned authorities and the cause is under investigation as per local police. We are in close contact with the bereaved kin and local community associations to provide all possible assistance.”
Local media later reported that Vanshika’s body was found near a beach. While authorities have not confirmed any cause of death, the investigation remains active. The family, meanwhile, suspects foul play and is seeking clarity and justice.
This incident has left the Indo-Canadian community in shock, and efforts continue to support the family through this tragic loss.
