A man was detained early Monday after damaging property at the Ohio home of U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, including breaking windows and vandalizing a vehicle, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight at Vance’s residence in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills neighbourhood. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said agents assigned to the home detained the individual after hearing a loud noise and discovering signs of forced entry. The man has not been publicly identified.
According to law enforcement officials familiar with the situation, the suspect used a hammer to break a window and attempted to enter the home. He also damaged a Secret Service vehicle while approaching the residence via the driveway. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.
At the time of the incident, the home was unoccupied. Vance and his family were not in Ohio, and his office confirmed they were already back in Washington, directing further inquiries to the Secret Service.
The Secret Service said it is working with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. attorney’s office as authorities review potential charges.
Walnut Hills, one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighbourhoods, overlooks the city and is known for its historic landmarks, including the Harriet Beecher Stowe House.
