Israel And Lebanon To Hold First Direct Talks In Decades Amid Ongoing War

Israel and Lebanon are set to hold their first direct diplomatic talks in decades in Washington, as both sides seek a path forward amid an escalating conflict that has devastated the region.

The high-level meeting will include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, alongside Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors, marking a rare moment of direct engagement between the two countries since 1993.

The talks come after more than a month of intense fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, which has left over 2,000 people dead in Lebanon and displaced more than one million. Despite the diplomatic push, violence continues, with Israeli forces pressing their ground offensive in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah launching daily attacks into northern Israel.

Lebanon’s government hopes the discussions will lead to a ceasefire and a broader resolution to the conflict. However, Israel has ruled out halting military operations at this stage, while Hezbollah has rejected the talks outright, warning it will not abide by any agreement reached.

The negotiations are expected to focus on long-term security arrangements along Israel’s northern border and efforts by Lebanon to assert greater control over its territory.

While the talks signal a potential diplomatic opening, deep divisions among the parties involved underscore the challenges ahead in achieving a lasting peace.
