A Canadian tourist has died after being shot at South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park, authorities confirmed.
According to the South African Police Service, the 69-year-old man was visiting the park on Thursday when he approached a concession operator who was carrying a rifle and asked whether the firearm was real.
Police allege that while the operator was demonstrating the weapon, it accidentally discharged, striking the tourist in the upper body. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Global Affairs Canada confirmed it is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in South Africa and is providing consular assistance to the victim’s family while working with local authorities to gather additional information.
South African police have opened an investigation and are examining potential charges, including culpable homicide and the reckless handling of a firearm.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
