Canada Women Hand Senegal 72-57 Defeat In Olympic Pre-Qualifying Opener

Canada’s senior women’s basketball team opened its FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament campaign with a 72-57 victory over Senegal on Monday in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Kayla Alexander led the Canadian offence with a team-high 16 points while adding seven rebounds. Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributed 13 points apiece to help Canada secure its first victory of the tournament.

Head coach Nell Fortner welcomed the winning start, praising Canada’s physical play and performance on the boards against a Senegal team known for its rebounding strength.

Canada held a 15-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, creating additional scoring opportunities throughout the game. Tara Wallack played a significant role on the glass, collecting four offensive rebounds.

Swords helped Canada establish control early by knocking down three three-pointers in the opening quarter. Canada built a lead of as many as 17 points and never trailed, although Senegal mounted a challenge midway through the third quarter.

The Canadians also held a significant advantage inside, outscoring Senegal 26-14 in the paint while shooting 52.5 per cent from that area.

Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, while Senegal’s reserves narrowly outscored Canada’s bench 31-29.

Canada has Tuesday off before returning to action against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET as it continues its push through the Olympic pre-qualifying tournament.
