Sunny Deol’s ‘Batwara 1947’ Ends Opening Weekend At ₹26 Crore, Below ‘Border 2’ First-day Collection

Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 collected Rs 26.50 crore at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, with the Rajkumar Santoshi-directed Partition drama facing stiff competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 opened with Rs 5.75 crore before benefiting from the Independence Day holiday to jump to Rs 13.50 crore on Saturday. However, collections dropped sharply on Sunday, falling by nearly 54 per cent to Rs 7.25 crore.

Saturday was the only day during the opening weekend when the film crossed the Rs 10-crore mark. The movie had 8,271 shows on its opening day, followed by 8,071 on Saturday and 7,239 on Sunday.

The Rs 26.50-crore weekend total also fell short of the opening-day collection of Sunny Deol’s previous theatrical release, Border 2, which earned around Rs 30 crore on its first day.

The bigger challenge for Batwara 1947 came from Awarapan 2. The Emraan Hashmi-starrer collected Rs 26.40 crore on its opening day alone — almost matching Batwara 1947‘s entire three-day weekend.

Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 went on to earn Rs 81.75 crore during its opening weekend, more than three times the collection recorded by Batwara 1947 over the same period.

Compared with other major Hindi releases of 2026, Batwara 1947 also posted a smaller opening weekend than Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, which collected Rs 443 crore, Dhamaal 4 at Rs 64.35 crore, Welcome to the Jungle at Rs 63.47 crore, Bhooth Bangla at Rs 54.50 crore and Cocktail 2 at Rs 46.76 crore.

It also trailed Alpha, which collected Rs 33.48 crore, and O’ Romeo, which earned Rs 28.25 crore during their respective opening weekends.

However, Batwara 1947 performed better than several other releases, including Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai at Rs 24.40 crore, Ikkis at Rs 18.20 crore, Mardaani 3 at Rs 17.25 crore and Pati Patni Aur Woh Do at Rs 17.15 crore.

The film has also delivered the biggest opening weekend for an Aamir Khan Productions-backed release this year, surpassing Happy Patel, which earned Rs 4.35 crore, and Ek Din, which collected Rs 2.50 crore.

Batwara 1947 marks the reunion of Sunny Deol and filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi three decades after their 1996 action film Ghatak. Their previous collaborations also include Ghayal and Damini.

The film also marks Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen eight years after Bhaiaji Superhit. Inspired by Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the Partition drama also stars Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and Abhimanyu Sharma.
