Jagmeet Singh Eyed For Destination Canada Top Role — Report

Former federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is reportedly being considered for the role of chief executive officer of Destination Canada, the federal Crown corporation responsible for promoting Canada as a tourism destination, according to CTV News.

Sources familiar with the matter told CTV News that Singh is among the leading candidates to head the agency, which operates under Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. Destination Canada works to attract international visitors, support the country’s tourism industry, and drive economic growth through travel.

If appointed, the role would mark a significant transition for Singh, moving from federal politics to leading Canada’s national tourism marketing organization at a time of intense global competition for international travellers.

Singh stepped down as NDP leader following the party’s disappointing performance in the 2025 federal election. He led the New Democratic Party from 2017 to 2025, becoming the first visible minority to head a major federal political party in Canada.

During his leadership, the NDP supported former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal minority government through a confidence-and-supply agreement that helped advance initiatives such as national dental care and the framework for universal pharmacare.

The 2025 election proved to be a historic setback for the party. The NDP lost official party status in the House of Commons, and Singh was defeated in his Burnaby Central riding, prompting him to announce his resignation as party leader on election night.

Supporters of Singh’s reported candidacy say his national profile, communication skills, and strong social media presence could help strengthen Canada’s global tourism brand. Critics, however, have questioned whether his background in politics and law provides the experience needed to lead a Crown corporation focused on tourism marketing and commercial partnerships.

Neither Singh nor the office of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development has publicly commented on the reported appointment process.

If confirmed, Singh would assume leadership of Destination Canada as the agency continues efforts to expand international tourism and position Canada as a year-round global travel destination.
