The Toronto Blue Jays have surged back into the American League playoff race, moving within half a game of a wild-card position after a crucial 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.
Toronto won two of three games in Cleveland to improve to 70-71 and has now won five of its last six. The Blue Jays are just half a game behind the Guardians in the wild-card standings despite remaining one game below .500.
The series victory also gave Toronto an important tiebreaker advantage over Cleveland should the two clubs finish the 162-game regular season with identical records.
Nathan Lukes played a key role in Thursday’s victory, driving in two runs with a pair of doubles as Toronto’s offence broke through with four runs in the fifth inning.
Brett Bateman opened the rally with a well-placed bunt before Lukes delivered a two-run double. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly and Jesús Sánchez added an RBI single to complete the four-run inning.
Toronto’s bullpen then shut down Cleveland, combining for 4.1 scoreless innings after starter Jose Soriano surrendered three runs over 4.2 innings.
Blue Jays reverse course after trade deadline
Toronto’s late-season resurgence comes just a month after the organization appeared to be looking toward the future.
At the Aug. 3 trade deadline, the Blue Jays moved veterans Kevin Gausman, Daulton Varsho and Jeff Hoffman in moves that suggested the organization did not expect to contend in 2026.
Instead, the club has climbed back into the postseason race.
Toronto posted a 17-11 record in August and has opened September 2-1. Its upcoming schedule also offers an opportunity to build momentum, with series against two of the American League’s three lowest-ranked teams.
Guerrero has also shown signs of finding his form at a critical stage of the season.
After recording three hits and five RBIs Wednesday, Guerrero added a walk and sacrifice fly Thursday. His recent improvement at the plate could provide a significant boost to a Toronto offence that has struggled for much of the season.
Guerrero acknowledged that 2026 has not unfolded the way he wanted but said he has encouraged his teammates to remain patient as he continues working through his struggles.
Reinforcements could provide late-season boost
The Blue Jays could also receive additional help as the playoff race enters its final weeks.
Jameson Taillon is scheduled to start Friday against Kansas City, while Trey Yesavage is expected to resume mound work soon and could potentially return before the end of the regular season.
Anthony Santander is also progressing toward a possible Triple-A rehabilitation assignment as early as next week, potentially providing another offensive option for Toronto.
Significant challenges remain.
The Blue Jays continue to rank near the bottom of Major League Baseball in runs, home runs and on-base percentage, while uncertainty remains in the starting rotation. Toronto is also still below .500 and currently outside a playoff position.
But after appearing to shift its attention away from contention at the trade deadline, Toronto suddenly finds itself with a realistic path to October baseball.
With only half a game separating the Blue Jays from a wild-card spot, the final weeks of the season have taken on an importance that seemed unlikely only a month ago.
