Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Injured In Deliberate Vehicle Attack, Australia’s PM Confirms

An Australian man has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly deliberately striking federal lawmaker Helen Haines with a vehicle outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday. The 65-year-old Independent MP remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being transferred to Melbourne for specialized treatment. Media have reported that Haines underwent a leg amputation, although hospital officials have not confirmed those reports. Police identified the accused as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent of Tarrawingee, who faces charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Authorities believe the incident was targeted and isolated, with no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.

According to eyewitness accounts cited by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, the suspect allegedly drove past Haines as she stood near her parked vehicle before turning around and striking her with a Toyota Land Cruiser. Witnesses reported that the driver then reversed and hit the politician a second time, pinning her against her car. Several bystanders rushed to intervene and helped detain the suspect until police arrived. Local barber Ricky Jefferies, who was among those who assisted, reportedly removed a knife from the accused’s possession. Albanese praised the courage of those who intervened, while Haines’s family expressed gratitude to the public, emergency responders and medical personnel.

The incident has shocked Australia’s political community, particularly because Haines is widely regarded as a respected and non-polarizing public figure. The accused’s father, Rod Nugent, described the attack as devastating, revealing that Haines had been a close family friend for more than two decades. Police continue to investigate the circumstances and possible motive behind the alleged assault. Nugent remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before a Wangaratta court on Wednesday, when his bail conditions may be considered.
