U.S. Democrats Eye Major Midterm Gains As New Poll Shows Nearly 10-Point Advantage

U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to a record low of 31 per cent, raising concerns for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday, public dissatisfaction with rising living costs and the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran has contributed to declining support for the president. The survey found that 47 per cent of respondents would vote for Democrats if the elections were held immediately, compared with 35 per cent supporting Republicans. The 12-point Democratic advantage represents the party’s largest lead during the current election cycle, widening from seven points just two weeks earlier.

The poll, which surveyed 1,679 adults, also revealed growing concerns about Republican economic management. Approximately 40 per cent of respondents said Democrats were better equipped to handle the economy, compared with 33 per cent who favoured Republicans. With all 435 House seats and 33 Senate seats up for election, Democrats are seeking to overturn the Republicans’ narrow congressional majorities. Republicans currently hold a 218-214 advantage in the House and a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Political analysts warn that Trump’s historically low approval ratings could significantly weaken Republican candidates, particularly as dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies continues to grow.

Historical election trends suggest that the president’s party frequently loses congressional seats during midterm elections, especially when presidential approval ratings fall below 50 per cent. According to projections cited from the media, Democrats have opportunities to gain Republican-held Senate seats in North Carolina and Maine, while competitive races in Alaska, Iowa and Texas could further influence the balance of power. Several Republican-held House districts are also considered vulnerable. However, analysts caution that national polling does not necessarily reflect individual state and district outcomes, making voter turnout and campaign mobilization critical factors in determining whether Democrats can regain control of Congress.
