Bank Of England Raises Interest Rate To 4%

The Bank of England has increased its benchmark interest rate to 4%, marking its first hike in more than three years, as policymakers seek to contain rising inflation amid economic uncertainty linked to the ongoing war in Iran.

The decision by the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) was widely anticipated by economists, with inflation currently standing at 3.5%, significantly above the central bank’s 2% target.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey cautioned that the increase should not be interpreted as the beginning of an extended series of rate hikes. However, he acknowledged that further increases could be necessary if the conflict in Iran continues to put pressure on prices.

The central bank uses interest rates to control inflation by making borrowing more expensive, thereby reducing consumer spending and easing demand across the economy.

The latest increase is expected to affect households and businesses, particularly borrowers with tracker mortgages and other variable-rate loans, who could face higher monthly repayments. Savers, meanwhile, may benefit from improved returns on deposits.

The decision comes as the British government faces mounting pressure to address the rising cost of living and support households struggling with financial pressures.

Chancellor John Healey said the government was taking steps to provide financial relief to families and businesses, while the opposition Conservatives called on Labour to reduce taxes, welfare spending and regulatory costs.

With inflation remaining above target and geopolitical tensions continuing to affect the global economic outlook, attention will now turn to whether the Bank of England introduces further rate increases in the coming months.
