10 Jan: Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was declared dead on arrival at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital at 12 a.m. on Friday. The 58-year-old leader sustained a fatal gunshot wound, though the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.
The confirmation of his death was provided by district AAP president Sharanpal Singh Makkar and Ludhiana commissioner of police Kuldeep Singh Chahal. Commissioner Chahal stated that an autopsy would reveal whether it was a case of suicide or an accidental shooting.
Earlier in the day, Gogi was actively involved in public engagements. He participated in a cleanliness drive for the Buddha Nullah alongside Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal. Additionally, he visited the Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir, where he assured devotees of action against a gang that had recently committed theft at the temple.
Gogi had also been vocal about the delays in the Buddha Nullah pipeline project, which he had inaugurated in 2022. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he had destroyed the foundation stone of the project in August 2024, highlighting the inefficiency of the departments involved.
Police officials, including Commissioner Chahal, rushed to the hospital upon receiving news of the incident. Investigations are underway, and the autopsy report is expected to provide crucial insights into the cause of death.
