Atlantic Liberal caucus urges PM Justin Trudeau to resign amid concerns over party leadership and future

30th December: The Atlantic Liberal caucus is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as party leader, citing concerns over the future of the government. A letter sent on December 23 and shared by New Brunswick MP Wayne Long calls for fresh leadership to give the party a better chance in the upcoming election and prevent a Conservative government led by Pierre Poilievre.

The letter, written by Nova Scotia MP Kody Blois, argues that it’s no longer feasible for Trudeau to remain in charge. It points to the instability the country faces, including potential trade tensions with the U.S. and the threat of opposition parties moving to declare non-confidence in the government. The letter recognizes Trudeau’s nine years of service and positive impact but warns that his continued leadership could undermine his achievements.

This call for change comes on the heels of Chrystia Freeland’s resignation as finance minister and deputy prime minister. The caucus is calling for a national meeting in early January to discuss their options moving forward. Trudeau is said to be contemplating his future during the holiday break.

Meanwhile, Conservative MP John Williamson is preparing to introduce a non-confidence motion on January 7, which could lead to a vote in the House of Commons by January 30 and potentially trigger an election. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has also announced his party’s loss of confidence in the government, promising to bring forward a non-confidence motion in the new year, regardless of who is leading the Liberal Party.
