14th Jan 2025: Government House Leader Karina Gould is preparing to enter the race for the Liberal leadership, with an announcement expected on Tuesday. Gould, who has held the position of Government House Leader since 2023, has been a key figure in the House of Commons.
The 37-year-old Member of Parliament for Burlington has been a part of the federal government since 2015, when she was among the many newly-elected Liberals who helped the party secure a majority in the House of Commons.
Before becoming Government House Leader, Gould held multiple significant roles in various ministries, including President of the Queen’s Privy Council, Minister of Democratic Institutions, Minister of International Development, and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.
She will face competition from other candidates, including Ontario Liberal MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP and businessman Frank Baylis, who are also running for the leadership position.
