28 Dec: Calgary Skyview MP George Chahal has publicly urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign, citing a lack of support from the Liberal caucus. In letters addressed to the Liberal caucus and party president Sachit Mehra, Chahal emphasized the urgency of initiating a transparent and democratic leadership race to navigate the party through mounting challenges.
Chahal shared his letters on the social media platform X on Friday, stating, “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau no longer has the support of caucus and, to maintain some dignity, he should immediately tender his resignation.” He also highlighted Chrystia Freeland’s recent departure as deputy prime minister and finance minister, describing it as a pivotal moment and part of a broader pattern of Liberal MPs distancing themselves from Trudeau.
In his letter to Mehra, Chahal called for immediate planning for a leadership race, regardless of whether Trudeau formally resigns. He noted the urgency with Canada approaching a fixed election year and the risk of other parties rallying to defeat the Liberal government.
“It is clear now that the leader of the Liberal Party no longer has the confidence of his parliamentary caucus and the vast majority of Canadians,” Chahal wrote, urging the Liberal Party of Canada board to act swiftly.
Chahal did, however, thank Trudeau for his years of service, acknowledging the difficult position the party now faces. “Unfortunately, it has come to this,” he concluded.
Growing Calls for Change
Political experts have noted that Chahal’s call adds to the growing list of Liberal MPs seeking Trudeau’s resignation. Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt remarked that Trudeau’s ability to survive as leader is increasingly uncertain. “Forget surviving a non-confidence vote in Parliament,” Bratt said. “He may not survive a non-confidence vote in caucus.”
Bratt noted that Freeland’s resignation served as a tipping point, fueling momentum for a leadership transition. Former chief adviser and close ally Gerald Butts described Freeland’s departure as a “staggering blow” in a recent Substack column, further stating that the party’s popularity is now reminiscent of pre-2013 levels when Trudeau first assumed leadership.
Historical Patterns and Voter Sentiments
Political analyst Lori Williams highlighted Canada’s historical tendency to reject prime ministers after about a decade in office, as seen with leaders like Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Jean Chrétien, and Stephen Harper. Williams linked this trend to voter fatigue and growing discontent over affordability issues tied to housing and immigration.
She added that Freeland’s resignation holds far more weight in shaping the party’s direction than Chahal’s letter, but his remarks contribute to the building pressure for Trudeau to step down. “People are desperate for change,” Williams said, emphasizing the challenges facing the party as it seeks to stabilize under a new leader in preparation for the upcoming election and the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency.
Trudeau has yet to issue a formal response to Chahal’s letter or the broader calls for his resignation.
