December 27: Conservative MP Jonathan Williamson plans to introduce a no-confidence motion early in the new year, which could potentially bring down Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.
Williamson announced on social media that he will present the motion at a public accounts committee meeting on January 7. The committee will then discuss it before passing it to the House of Commons when it reconvenes on January 27.
If the motion is approved, a vote could take place as soon as January 30, possibly triggering an immediate election.
Earlier this fall, three similar motions from the Tories failed. However, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s unexpected resignation, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has stated he is now ready to support a vote to bring down the government.
