Families Mark Anniversary of Deadly Air India Crash With Vigils

Families across India and abroad gathered Friday to mark the first anniversary of the Air India Flight 171 disaster, one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the country’s history, as investigators continue searching for answers about what caused the crash.

The London-bound flight crashed just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, striking a medical college complex and killing 260 people — including 241 passengers and crew on board and 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger survived.

One year later, grief remains fresh for many families who continue to seek accountability and closure. India’s aviation investigators released an update Friday, saying evidence is still being analyzed and that a final report will be issued once the investigation is complete.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said authorities remain committed to a thorough and objective investigation while extending condolences to the victims’ families.

At the crash site in Ahmedabad, relatives gathered with photographs, flowers, and prayers. The area remains cordoned off, with damaged buildings still bearing visible scars from the impact. Memorials featuring garlands, messages, and portraits have transformed the site into a place of remembrance.
