Federal Grand Jury Declines To Indict Former White House Aide Cassidy Hutchinson

A federal grand jury in Washington declined on Tuesday to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over statements she made about Donald Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, according to a senior U.S. official.

The grand jury returned a “no bill,” rejecting prosecutors’ request to bring criminal charges. Hutchinson was not named when the decision was announced in court, but the official identified her case as the subject of the proceedings.

The investigation focused on Hutchinson’s 2022 testimony before the congressional committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Hutchinson previously served as a senior aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

During her testimony, she described events surrounding the attack and Trump’s conduct that day. Some of her statements concerned events she witnessed, while others recounted information she said had been relayed to her by other officials.

The case was handled by officials in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, led by Harmeet Dhillon. Hutchinson’s attorneys and the department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The grand jury’s decision does not prevent prosecutors from seeking an indictment again. It is not a trial verdict or a determination of guilt or innocence.
