Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announces she will not run for Liberal leadership

10th Jan: Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has announced she will not enter the race for the Liberal leadership.

Joly was widely seen as a potential successor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently revealed plans to step down as leader of the Liberal Party. In a brief statement on X, Joly explained her decision, emphasizing her commitment to addressing critical issues like the “unjustified threat” of tariffs from U.S. president-elect Donald Trump.

“Over the past week, I’ve spoken with many friends, colleagues, and advisors who encouraged me to run for leadership. However, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, I must dedicate all my time and energy to defending the interests of Canadians, which I will continue to do,” Joly wrote.

The Liberal Party is set to elect a new leader by March 9. Candidates must declare their intention to run by January 23 and pay a $350,000 registration fee—significantly higher than the previous fee of $75,000.

On Monday, Trudeau announced his resignation, citing internal challenges within the party.
