Former B.C. Premier and Canadian Ambassador to Germany, John Horgan, Passes Away at 65

Former British Columbia Premier and Canada’s Ambassador to Germany, John Horgan has passed away at 65. Earlier in June, Horgan revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer for the third time during a routine follow-up for his previous throat cancer. Following the diagnosis, Horgan took a leave of absence from his role as Canada’s ambassador to Germany.

Horgan leaves behind his wife, Ellie, and their two sons. Born and raised in Victoria, Horgan entered politics in 2005 when he was first elected to the B.C. Legislature. He became the province’s leader in 2017 and served as premier through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, until stepping down in 2022 due to health issues and declining energy levels.

He officially vacated his MLA seat the following spring. In November 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed him as Canada’s ambassador to Germany.
