Habitat for Humanity GTA Celebrates New Beginnings with William St. Welcome Home Ceremony in Brampton

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) proudly welcomed 12 families into their new homes during a special Welcome Home Ceremony on William Street in Brampton today. The event marks a significant milestone for families, who begin a new chapter in their lives and will now enjoy the stability, security and opportunity that come with having a place to call home.

“Each of these twelve families have their own story of determination, sacrifice and perseverance that led them to the sense of pride and possibility that homeownership has given them,” said Ene Underwood, CEO of Habitat GTA. “For us at Habitat for Humanity GTA, this moment is another affirmation of the impact we can achieve together with our partners and community. We are proud to stand with these families as they begin this exciting new chapter.”

The new development features newly built stacked townhomes designed to provide long-term stability and opportunity for local families.

“From the moment we first came to Canada as a family, we’ve always lived in a basement unit. We were thankful to have a roof over our heads, but, like every family, we hoped and prayed that one day we would have a place to truly call our own, a place where we could grow together, celebrate milestones, and create memories that would last forever. Today, that dream has become a reality,” said Silvia, one of the Habitat Partner Family members who recently moved into the new community.

The project was made possible through important partnerships and funding contributions, including $1,541,054 from the City of Brampton’s Housing Accelerator Fund, $600,000 in grants from the Region of Peel, and $1,200,000 from the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.

“This $11-million development reflects what’s possible when partners come together to expand access to affordable housing close to transit, schools, and essential services,” said Peel Region Chair & CEO Nando Iannicca. “Habitat for Humanity continues to create real pathways to homeownership for hardworking households who are priced out of today’s market. Peel Region is proud to be part of the collective effort supporting safe, stable, and inclusive communities for everyone.”

Government representatives, donors, volunteers, and Habitat GTA staff gathered to celebrate the new homeowners, marking the completion of the new community.

“Today marks an exciting milestone for Brampton as we welcome 12 families to their new homes at William Street. Homeownership remains out of reach for too many hardworking families, which is why partnerships like this are so important,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “Through the leadership of Habitat for Humanity GTA and the support of our government partners, these families now have an opportunity to build equity, put down roots, and create a brighter future for generations to come. Located in the heart of our city and close to transit, schools, parks, and essential services, this new community reflects our shared commitment to increasing affordable housing options and ensuring Brampton remains a place where families can thrive.”

The William Street community was made possible through the generosity of individual donors, corporate partners, foundations, and public funders who share Habitat GTA’s belief that everyone deserves a place to call home. Among these supporters is the family of an anonymous donor whose nearly $600,000 memorial gift helped make this community possible. In recognition of the family’s contribution, a commemorative bench has been installed within the community as a place of rest and reflection. The bench honours the donor’s legacy as an immigrant, carpenter, homeowner, volunteer, and someone who believed deeply in extending a helping hand to others. His memory will live on through the families who will build their futures at William Street.

Today’s celebration brought together government partners, donors, volunteers and neighbours to recognize the families’ achievement and welcome them to their new community. The event featured family-friendly activities including bouncy castles, carnival games and cotton candy, while residents and guests enjoyed food, conversation and the opportunity to connect with one another.

Without a doubt, the event highlights the power of collaboration and community investment in addressing the growing need for affordable housing in the region.

The completed project represents another important step toward Habitat GTA’s ambitious goal of creating 2,000 affordable homes by 2035. Each home is a foundation for a better future, providing families with the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their communities.
