Labour minister Steven MacKinnon opts out of Liberal leadership bid

Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has decided not to run for the Liberal leadership, stating that there isn’t enough time to run the kind of campaign he would want. In a social media post, he mentioned that the leadership race needs experienced voices who are pragmatic and can speak in both English and French. While he believes he could bring that perspective, the short campaign timeline doesn’t fit with his plans.

The new Liberal leader is expected to be announced on March 9, leaving just eight weeks for candidates to campaign and gather support. With the opposition parties aiming to bring down the government soon after, MacKinnon says he will focus on his current ministerial duties and help decide who should replace Prime Minister Trudeau.

MacKinnon expressed admiration for those considering the leadership race and said he is honoured to represent Gatineau in Parliament, where he will seek re-election. Trudeau, who announced his resignation earlier in January, will step down once a new leader is chosen.

So far, a few candidates, including Frank Baylis and Chandra Arya, have entered the race, while others, like Melanie Joly, Anita Anand, and Dominic LeBlanc, have ruled themselves out.
