Liberal caucus meeting today and tomorrow amid selection of new leader

OTTAWA — The race to find the next leader of the federal Liberal Party is reaching a crucial point, with candidates facing a 5 p.m. deadline today to submit their paperwork.

The Liberal caucus is meeting on Parliament Hill as the party prepares for a leadership change following Justin Trudeau’s departure. Candidates still need to be officially approved, a process that could take up to ten days.

So far, former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, ex-finance minister Chrystia Freeland, and Ottawa MP Chandra Arya have submitted their documents and the required $50,000 deposit. Others, including former house leader Karina Gould, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and former MPs Frank Baylis and Ruby Dhalla, have also expressed interest.

Candidates have just four more days to sign up new members who can vote in the leadership election, which is set for March 9.
