Liberals Choose New Leader Today, Marking End of Trudeau’s Leadership

Today, the Liberal Party of Canada will announce its new leader, ending Justin Trudeau’s time at the helm. The leadership race was sparked by Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year. After a busy race, the new leader will also be the party’s candidate in the upcoming federal election, which looks to be a close contest with the Conservatives.

Mark Carney, former Bank of Canada governor, is considered the favorite to win, leading in both support and fundraising. Other candidates include Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould, and Frank Baylis. Voting has already begun online, with thousands of Liberals casting their ballots ahead of today’s announcement.

The process for selecting the new leader involves a points system, where each riding has 100 points. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the points in the first round, the candidate with the least votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed.

The results will be revealed at an event in Ottawa, where Trudeau will speak about his time as leader, marking the end of his 12-year tenure. The new leader won’t immediately become prime minister, but they will soon take over, with an election likely to happen in the coming months.
