At least 14 people have been killed by lightning strikes in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, as monsoon storms continue to batter parts of the country, authorities said.
Police said farm workers in open fields accounted for most of the victims, with 10 of the deaths reported in Giridih district. At least seven other people were injured during Tuesday’s thunderstorms.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more widespread rainfall across Jharkhand over the coming days, raising concerns about further weather-related incidents.
Lightning strikes are a recurring hazard during India’s annual monsoon season. According to the IMD, more than 200 people died in Jharkhand in 2025, with most fatalities linked to lightning associated with thunderstorms.
The deaths come as heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across India. Assam has recorded nearly 90 flood-related deaths, while Kerala has reported 15 fatalities and the displacement of thousands of residents due to flooding and landslides.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those working outdoors, to remain alert and follow weather advisories as the monsoon continues.
