A NATO fighter jet has shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace from neighbouring Belarus, intensifying concerns that the Russia-Ukraine war and growing military tensions in the Baltic region could increasingly spill across NATO borders.
Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre said an Italian fighter operating as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Defence mission intercepted the unmanned aircraft shortly after midnight Tuesday. The drone was brought down near the village of Pratkunai, not far from the city of Kaunas.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the aircraft represented a threat that most likely originated from Russia. Lithuanian officials, however, said the drone’s origin had not yet been conclusively established and that investigators would examine the debris before determining whether it was Russian and potentially part of a deliberate provocation.
Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas thanked the Italian pilots for their response. Authorities had earlier issued a drone alert for Vilnius and surrounding areas, while footage released by the Lithuanian military showed pieces of the downed aircraft scattered across a grassy area.
The incident adds to mounting concerns about unmanned aircraft crossing into NATO territory during the war. Ukrainian drones have also previously entered Baltic airspace, with Kyiv saying some were diverted from their intended routes by Russian electronic jamming. NATO aircraft have intercepted stray Ukrainian drones over Estonia and Latvia in recent months.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Monday that Russian military activity close to alliance territory would lead NATO to strengthen both its support for Ukraine and its own defences along the eastern frontier. NATO has maintained an air-policing presence over Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia since the Baltic states joined the alliance in 2004.
Tensions are also rising elsewhere in the Baltic region. Denmark said a Russian frigate fired two flares toward a Danish military helicopter on Monday, prompting Copenhagen to summon Russia’s ambassador. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the encounter unacceptable, while Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described it as part of what she characterized as increasingly aggressive Russian behaviour toward Europe.
Russia disputed Denmark’s account of responsibility, accusing Danish military helicopters of carrying out dangerous manoeuvres near Russian warships and formally complaining to Copenhagen. Moscow has also repeatedly rejected broader European allegations that it is conducting hybrid attacks against NATO countries.
The incidents come as Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging strikes despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the two sides had agreed to stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure.
Russia launched around 200 drones against Ukraine overnight, according to Ukrainian officials, killing two people and striking petrol stations in Kyiv as well as energy, port and transportation infrastructure elsewhere. Ukraine, meanwhile, said it attacked the Syzran oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region and targeted drone-related facilities in Taganrog and Oryol.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was prepared to support de-escalation but questioned whether Russia would reciprocate. The Kremlin, meanwhile, characterized Trump’s initiative as a U.S. proposal rather than a completed agreement and said discussions with Washington would continue.
The combination of continued attacks in Ukraine, repeated drone incursions and increasingly tense military encounters around the Baltic Sea is placing greater attention on NATO’s eastern flank. While the origin and purpose of the drone brought down over Lithuania remain under investigation, its interception demonstrates how quickly incidents connected to the wider conflict can bring NATO forces directly into action.
